Irreversible Entanglements are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes (a duo who also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn, and the full quintet’s first time playing together was captured for this debut. In four relentless bouts of inspired fire music the instrumentalists explore and elaborate compositional ideas drawn from their deep individual studies of free jazz improvisation, but the tone of each piece is driven decisively by Ayewa’s searing poetic narrations of Black trauma, survival and power. The message is the undeniable essence of the music. Though free jazz with voice is an uncommon approach in the modern day landscape of the genre, the spirit and subject the band channels and explores represent a return to a central tenant of the sound as it was founded – to be a vehicle for Black liberation. As creative and adventurous as any recording of contemporary avant-garde jazz but offering listeners no abstractions to hide behind, this is music that both honors and defies tradition, speaking to the present while insisting on the future.
SAMMUS (Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo) is an Ithaca-raised, Philadelphia-based rap artist, producer, and PhD student in the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University. Known as much for her rousing stage presence as she is for her prowess as a beatmaker and lyricist, Sammus has spent the past several years cultivating a strong following of activists, hip hop heads, punks, and self-identified nerds and geeks, among others. As noted by the Los Angeles Times, Sammus “has a gift for getting a message across.” Having recently made her Don Giovanni debut (while remaining tied to NuBlack Music Group), she is poised to cement herself as an artist who consistently thinks outside boxes and dances across lines (and does other neat things with geometrical figures).
Fever-pop duo HOME BODY ignores convention with their vivid blend of electronic, new wave, and experimental pop music, performed with wild abandon and "art-school-cool" theatricality. Based in western Massachusetts, synthesist Eric Hnatow and Vocalist Haley Morgan play with form and improvisation, as well as light and movement, to create a high vibration spectacle buzzing with soul, shadow, and depth. Their sophomore album "Spiritus" is due out March 26th, 2019 via Peace+Rhythm and Feeding Tube Records.
La Neve, the “more fully realized” version of Joey La Neve DeFrancesco, is a musician and drag artist who performs house and industrial music that’s known to dive into political concerns. The artist also performs guitar and vocals in the similarly political rock group Downtown Boys. - Stereo Gum
Lady D & the Shadow Spirits plays deeply powerful soulful poetry through the lens of rock, folk, soul and punk music. Their sound is unclassifiable in a sense, they traverse flawlessly between intimacy and expansiveness and somewhere in the middle there is actual magic.
